Space Type 2: Upgrade War — free browser game notes and strategy

Arcade Action Mobile-friendly

About the game

Play Space Type 2: Upgrade War free in your browser — a 1950s black-and-white space shooter where you can upgrade EVERYTHING, even the graphics. Buy color, real sound, a proper score, and an arsenal. Survive 30 minutes if you can. (There is no Space Type 1.)

How to play

Controls

  • Desktop: A / D or the arrow keys to steer — or just move the mouse. Your ship fires automatically. Space (or the NUKE button) launches a nuke once you've unlocked it.
  • Mobile: drag anywhere on the screen to slide the ship left and right; tap the NUKE button to fire a nuke.

Tips & strategy

You only steer, so positioning is everything — keep moving and read the next wave instead of camping one lane. Spend early coins on reliability before luxury: hull and core damage keep you alive, and even the color and sound upgrades earn their keep by making threats easier to parse at a glance. Kill the Doom Courier that arrives every minute before its countdown finishes, respect the unique miniboss at 2:30 and the bullet-hell boss at 5:00, and bank nukes for the moments a boss compresses the whole playfield. The goal is to survive 30 minutes to the Cosmic Leviathan; push to 60:00 and something unkillable shows up.

Fullscreen

Hit the Fullscreen button in the bar above the play area to expand. To exit, press Esc (or swipe down from the top edge on touch) and tap the Exit button that slides in.

Frequently asked questions

What can you upgrade?

Everything — that's the war. Weapons (pea shooter, lasers, timed bombs, spiral shot, an EPIC charge laser, nukes, a bow shield, your hull) and the game itself: the graphics (twice — first to color, then to a full modern render), the sound effects, and the music. The game starts as a grainy 1950s monochrome cabinet with bargain-bin audio; your coins buy it back to life. Purists can clear it untouched in black and white for the Noir Legend achievement.

What is the goal?

Survive 30 minutes. A Doom Courier arrives every minute (kill it before its countdown ends), a unique miniboss every 2:30, and a unique bullet-hell boss every 5:00 — with the Cosmic Leviathan waiting at 30:00. Survive past that and boss swarms escalate until 60:00, when something unkillable arrives. Reaching it earns the "You Survived the Un-survivable" achievement.

Where is Space Type 1?

There is no Space Type 1. There has only ever been Space Type 2. We think it's funnier this way.

Upgrade-war notes

The joke has mechanics

Space Type 2 starts as a deliberately underpowered black-and-white cabinet, but the upgrade joke matters because every purchase changes readability or survival. Buying color and better sound is not only cosmetic; it helps you parse threats faster during dense waves.

Survival plan

Early coins should make the ship dependable before you chase luxury. Improve basic damage, hull safety, and screen readability, then add specialty tools like nukes when bosses start compressing the playfield. The 30-minute goal is long enough that scattered upgrades eventually show their weakness.

Why it is unique

The page makes clear that this is not a generic shooter upload. The hook is upgrading the game itself: presentation, weapons, and survival tools all climb from bargain-bin arcade to modern chaos while the player fights to outlast escalating bosses.

Before you play

Space Type 2: Upgrade War plays straight in the browser with no download and no account — and the whole hook is that you upgrade the game itself. Treat the early upgrades as survival tools, not decoration: color and real sound make incoming fire easier to read, which keeps you alive long enough to afford the weapons that carry the 30-minute run. Purchases and progress are saved locally in your browser, never on a server.
